Overview

To reach this puzzle, as you leave Puzzle 6 and walk towards Puzzle 7, take the path to the left that goes behind Puzzle 6.

When you enter the puzzle, you find yourself in a small area with an inverter and an accumulator right in front of you. There is a blue emitter on the side, and a red receiver close by. Between these two is a window that looks into an area that is accessible from a corridor on the side. At the end of the corridor is a fan, that when activated, prevents the player from walking through it. Beyond that area is a blue door, and in the next room is a pressure plate that controls a second blue door that leads to the progress wheel.

Hints

A basic hint:

[ hint ]
Despite looking small, this is one of the hardest puzzles in the base game. The name of the puzzle, Lateral Inhibition indicates that the fan will inhibit you from accessing the rear part of the puzzle. However, it could also mean that you have to inhibit one of the laser beams in some way.

If you're wondering what the objective of the puzzle is:

[ hint ]
You need to reach a configuration where you are in the back room, the receiver is activated in order to open the first blue door, and you have a piece of equipment you can use to put on the pressure plate to open the second blue door.

If you're trying to periodically interrupt the light:

[ hint ]
The fan does not stay off long enough to allow you to make progress on the corridor. This is not the intended solution, try another way.

If you're wondering what mechanics you need to solve this puzzle:

[ hint ]
Read up more on the detailed rules of an inverter.

If you're wondering how to sequence your work:

[ hint ]
There absolutely must be some equipment in the back room near the end of your solution, because otherwise you won't be able to open the second blue door. So set that up first. Then, think about the name of this puzzle.

A list of major objectives:

[ hint ]
Place some equipment in the back room. Come back to the front and prep some more equipment. Go back to the back room and remove the inhibition.
